Owing to its long
time activity in music, Coro Biotz Alai, has in its
repertoire some considerable amount of male voice
compositions, with over 300 works sung in concerts and
performances, some of them belonging to great scores like
triptics, diptics and whole masses.
Our major
repertoire consists of works of the basque choral folklore,
by celebrated composers like Guridi, Aramburu, Iruarrizaga,
Sorozábal, Aita Madina, Sarriegui, Garbizu, Usandizaga,
Mokoroa and many others. All this makes Biotz Alai one of
the choirs with the largest repertoire in the Basque choral
music.
Another
important chapter is the poliphonic music both religious
and classical, executing works by Mozart or Beethoven to
Pallestrina, T. Luis de Vitoria, Cherubini, Witt, Perosi,
Arriaga, Riga, etc.
It is outstanding in this chapter, the Requiem Mass (Misa
de Requiem) in “D” minor by Luigi Cherubini,
which was performed by Coro Biotz Alai, Deustoarrak, the
Orfeón de Sestao, with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra
conducted by the well remembered maestro Urbano Ruiz
Laorden.
Various
masses, Ave Marias, motets and other compositions fill this
part of the repertoire, but we can’t omit to mention
the “Misa in Honorem Beata Maria Virginem” by
Vicente Goicoechea, a wonderful composer from Aramaiona who
wass an organist in the Valladolid cathedral. He certainly
came up with one of the most beatiful masses ever
composed for male voices, by writing this one. The Biotz
Alai has performed it on several occassions, the last one
in 2003, accompanied by the Euskal Camerata Orchestra
conducted by Josu Soldevilla, a CD of which has been
recorded.
Another
important part of this repertoire is that of the
international music.
During
this choir’s numerous tours all over the world,
typical songs from the various countries visited have been
included in its repertoire which form a very interesting
selection with English, German, Czek, Venezuelan,
Argentine, Italian, etc, songs.
It
would take too long to give full details about the whole
repertoire of a choir with a history of over 80 years. This
